Being an Entrepreneur on holiday: My Experience ✈️

On Wednesday evening, I returned home from a birthday trip to Tunisia 🇹🇳. (Thanks Mum!).

But if you asked me whether I found the vacation to be entirely refreshing. You might be surprised at my response.

I recently started Web3sy, an e-learning platform introducing tech enthusiasts and young professionals to emerging technologies. Being so early in my start-up journey, I find that I am constantly making changes, amendments and improvements to my MVP. Even while on holiday.

You see, whilst in Tunisia, I discovered a few things about entrepreneurship away from home. Being a start-up owner comes with a set of challenges that I thought I knew in advance, but in practice, I realised that things can always turn out a bit differently than expected.

So here are my 5 key takes on being an startup Founder away from home.

  1. Being an entrepreneur means working 24 hours a day – Often people start businesses to escape the rigidity of the rat race. But in actuality, the beginning of any start-up is a huge foray of not knowing what to do, and pouring what feels like hours of experimentation with the tiniest details on whilst being on a phone call with your friend who may be the only thing keeping you sane. The work is always developing and continuous, even if it means sacrificing your Zs.
  2. Being an entrepreneur means staying at the hotel bar until 1am just to get the good Wi-Fi – Being on holiday does still mean enjoying yourself, so I definitely appreciated the access to unlimited cocktails. It did mean I had to double check my spelling more often, though! When the Wi-Fi just wasn’t strong enough in my room, I made sure to relocate so I could get what I needed to get done, done.
  3. Being an entrepreneur means double-checking your time zones! – Scheduling calls and meetings abroad was exciting and fun until I remembered that even an hour in a time difference means that scheduling needs to be considered very carefully.
  4. Being an entrepreneur means saying No to things. – There were certainly times where I had to schedule my holiday activities around my plans for Web3sy simply because some things were immovable. I found that maintaining consistency and organisation, and delaying short-term gratification allowed me to eventually complete all the things that I wanted to do.
  5. Being an entrepreneur means acknowledging your mistakes, weaknesses and shortcomings – This one isn’t really about being on holiday, but it is something that I came to terms with whilst abroad. Although I know that I have many strengths, I also knew that at the end of the day, I knew nothing. The scary part about entrepreneurship is knowing that it is a path less trodden, and so much of walking that road means doing so without knowing where you are going, and without even having a map to direct you. It can be lonely, isolating, and daunting to not know whether your next step will catapult you forwards or backwards. The rewarding part however, is understanding that regardless of the outcome, you are growing and failure is only failure as long as you don’t try again.

All in all, I realised that the only person who can get motivate myself, is me. I also believe that work and pleasure can go hand in hand as long as you love what you do. But that being said, no man or woman is an island, and I certainly would not have been able to get Web3sy as far as it has come, without the help of some very special people. Our Blog and Course Content Creator Kelechi Henry and our Social Media Manager Rachael Olumuyiwa . Start-up culture can be irritating, time-consuming and demanding, but I believe we help each other see it through, amazingly.

Web3sy is growing and I am so excited to see what comes next, and give back to my team. We have a lot of ideas brewing that we can’t wait to get out to you all. You can find out exactly what we are working on, by visiting our website www.Web3sy.com.

Remember. Web3? Easy. Web3sy.

Until next time!
